The Domino Effect
In spring 2007, the Engage community in upstate South Carolina did a series called Domino Effect: Falling forward into the story of good and evil. As we concluded the series, we decided to start a domino effect by starting small businesses in Ethiopia. In one night, a group of 300 people gave $6,172 toward this project.
In celebration, each person in attendance got a domino and this instruction: when someone does something that adds to the story of good in your life, give them the domino. Those people then passed the dominos on to someone else, and a story of good began in our world.
We want to hear your stories of how you got a domino and how you gave it away. Read the stories below and see how you are part of the domino effect.

Jason - Byron, MN - June 2008

Got it: I got the domino in the DVD box that I got to teach my small youth group. The kit worked great.

Gave it: I gave the domino to one of my students who was so excited. I'm expecting that she already had a friend in mind that she wanted to give it to.
--

Brian - Greenville, SC - March 2008

Got it: At Engage

Gave it: This past summer I was able to return to Cambodia. I spent two years there as a "Missionary." (It's always been a little difficult to refer to oneself as a "Missionary") It was there that I passed on my domino to a friend of mine who is a 46-year old Japenese-American from Hawaii. She is a nurse and has been in Cambodia for the past 8 years or so. But I know God has used her in an awesome way! There are so many villagers and locals who know her by name and have experienced the love of Christ as she goes out to the villages to do medical clinics, Bible-storying, and teaching. To me her life is like that domino because she has had such an effect on so many of the locals there.

--

Jessica - Roland, AR - December 2007

Got it: My best friend Anna gave it to me this summer. She got it at camp. I have known her almost my whole life! It meant so much to me!

Gave it: I gave it to Travis. I met him at college, and he was my first boyfriend. I gave it to him because he helped my get through my first semester and because he helped me to grow closer to God through some really hard times.

--

Megan - Spartanburg, SC - December 2007

Got it: My Grandfather gave it to me!

Gave it: I gave to my friend Jessica when she was helping me clean up the lunch table.

--

Alysia -- Mauldin, SC -- August 2007

Got it: From my friend Rebecca, who originally got the domino at Engage.

Gave it: I'm giving it to Amanda Holmes, who is a college student at my church. Despite working at her job and taking summer classes, she agreed to take on the daunting task of running our Vacation Bible School. Watching her step up to that challenge and the role of servant-leader at her young age was inspiriational to our whole congregation. She helped impact over 100 lives of the children who attended!!

--

Lindsay -- Greenville, SC -- August 2007

Got it: at Engage

Gave it: I gave it to my brother and sister-in-law while I was visiting them. In the car I gave it to Danielle, then later on I told my brother Lance about it. They have been an influence in my life of how to live more like Jesus in many aspects. I'm truly blessed to have them in my life!

--

Ina -- Lakeland, FL -- June 2007

Got it: I received the domino from Chris Brooks at a high school camp in Ducktown, Tennessee.

Gave it: I am giving my domino to my mom, Mabel King, in Kingsport, Tennessee. She is responsible for getting me to church as a child, where I received Christ as my Savior. She has continued to support and care for me throughout my life. Now, as the grandmother to my two sons, she has spent endless hours praying for them daily. She also continues to be a strong support to me as an adult and as a parent. I love her, and I can never thank her enough for being the first example of Christ and His love in my life.

--

Heather -- Brandon, MS -- June 2007

Got it: I got the domino from High School Camp with my church in Orange Beach, Alabama. Chris Brooks was our speaker and each person at camp recieved one of the dominos.

Gave it: I gave the domino to Matthew David Bolian. I just switched schools this past year, and he was one person who made me feel included when I felt at my lowest. He truly touched my heart like no one else, and we became best friends throughout the year. He is leaving July 1 for West Point (U.S. Military Academy), and I want him to be able to give the piece to someone who touches his heart and makes him feel welcomed up there just like he did for me when I first transfered schools.
--

Sam - Aiken, SC - June 2007

Got it: I found it at a campground in Tennessee.

Gave it: Left it as a tip at a restaurant.

--

Matt - Lakeland, FL - June 2007

Got it: I got one from a friend who I invited and encouraged to come to church who has now come to know Christ through our camp. I got another from a friend who wanted to remind me how important our friendship was and how it led to an amazing change in both of our lives. The moral is, never taken for granted the things in our lives which seem to be insignificant. In both instances, friends' lives were changed by things I found to be "the right thing to do." God works in the details!

--

Kenneth - Lakeland, FL - June 2007

Got it: My brother gave it to me for being the one he comes to for spiritual discernment.

--

David - Santa Ana, CA - May 2007

Gave it: To someone who always does nice things for me and never asks for a thank you.

--

Kim - Americus, GA - May 2007

Got it: My boyfriend, Blake, attended the Engage where the dominos were given out. Because I work at a group home for troubled teenage girls and am able to go to work with a smile daily even through the hardships, he felt that I had earned the domino.

Gave it:The vice president of the group home that I work at, who is a very Godly man, came to speak to my team today and encouraged us about some tough issues that we are dealing with concerning our girls. He really touched me with his words and definitely has a gift for uplifting people. I passed my domino on to him for his kind words.

--

Kari - Greenville, SC - May 2007

--

Julie - Greenville, SC - April 2007

Got it: at Engage

--

Addison - Greenville, SC - April 2007

Got it: at Engage

Gave it: I’m passing the domino to my small group leader Scott Shuford. It was nothing huge but it meant a lot in my life. We were talking, and a member of our group started talking, and Scott said facetiously, “If that is gossip, I don’t want to hear it.” It was something about the phrase and his steadfast nature that was a huge shining light for Christ. It just influenced me to follow after God’s own heart even stronger.

--

Todd - Greenville, SC - April 2007

Got it: at Engage

Gave it: My best friend from back home is getting married in one month. I gave him some Tommy Nelson Song of Solomon sermons and a few dominos for him and his future wife. They love each other and the Lord so much, and I want the very best for both of them. I want his marriage to be so rewarding and beautiful. And in a couple of years when I get married, if the CDs have helped his marriage be fulfilling, I would love for him to give them back to me. I gave him the dominos and unleashed good on his life, and hopefully he will do good with it and pass it on to others.

--

Morgan - Greenville, SC - April 2007

Got it: at Engage

Gave it: I was at church on a Wednesday I didn’t have school, and I got a chance to hear a guest pastor. The man who was with him was named Rawsruant. He is a Christian pop artist from Florida, and the Holy Spirit spoke to me through his music. I just felt led to tell him that God loves him and that I saw Jesus’ light shining in him. I passed him the domino and hoped he would do the same.

--

Gray - Greenville, SC - April 2007

--

Hailey - Greenville, SC - April 2007

Got it: at Engage

Gave it: I never realized just how great my best friend truly is until being separated from her when we went to two separate colleges. Even though I don’t see her but a handful of times a year, I have learned that my best friend Gillian has walked with Christ all her life. Her constant love and support in my own life has been a blessing. I thank God for putting such a beautiful woman in my life. That is why I passed her my domino.

--

John - Oroville, CA - April 2007

Got it: Erica, my summer missionary, gave it to me, and I am touched buy God's influnce in her life through me. California church is fun, and we had fun with the girls from South Carolina. Believe it or not, we know how to fry chicken and sing biscuits-and-gravy gospel praise music. We don't have to comprimise the truth the have some fun. There are enough uptight people to go around, and when you are not, people will be drawn to you. God gave us a sense of humor, and together we engaged it and praised Jesus.

--

Hair - Greenville, SC - April 2007

Got it: at Engage

Gave it: I wasn't quite sure how to pass my domino the first week that I got it. I held onto it for a little while until I figured out who to give it to. There is a guy I work with who has been struggling with this whole Kingdom of God thing. He has been a Christian for years, and only recently has been trying to turn his life around. He has helped me out in many ways at work, including inviting me to his house for dinner. He and I have had a strained relationship, but we both have been Jesus to each other. He is the one that I passed the Domino to, not only because I saw God in the things he has done, but also because he needs his dominos to start going in the other direction.

Ali - Greenville, SC - April 2007

Got it: at Engage

Gave it: I was so inspired, I stashed a handful of dominos into my purse, and over the next two weeks I began handing them out. The first one I gave to an 87-year-old woman I met during work. She told me God had told her to come talk to me, and because the conversation brightened my day so much, I passed her a domino. The next one I gave to my friend Jack, who I don't get to see often enough. He is an amazing reflection of the Lord, and I wanted to encourage him. So I wrapped a note around the domino and left it on his car. Then I gave one to my beautiful friend MG. She normally attends Engage but was gone the week they handed out dominos. My next two dominos went to two complete strangers. My fiance and I had just bought a grill at Home Depot and were struggling to put it in the back of my SUV. Just as we realized it would not fit, two men offered to put it in the back of their truck and follow us home. A little part of us wondered if they would drive off with our shiny grill, but they didn't. When we arrived home and unloaded our new purchase, I tried to hand the men some money, but they refused. So instead I gave them each a domino and told them to pass them on to someone who adds to the story of good in their lives just as they added to the story of good in mine.

Alicia - Greenville, SC - April 2007

I had the opportunity to see him Easter Sunday. I was able to tell him that he has been a part of a great good in my life. We talked, cried, and encouraged each other through more conversations that day. He wanted to hold onto the domino for a while before passing it on.

--

Allison - Greenville, SC - April 2007

Got it: at Engage

Gave it: I passed the domino (along with a burned copy of an Engage talk) to my little sister in North Carolina. After five years of separation, it broke the ice. This weekend will be only the second time I’ve seen her in five years. God is good!

--

Leanne - Greenville, SC - April 2007

Got it: at Engage

Gave it: I gave my domino to a close friend of mine, Ashley. She is about ten years older than me and is always trying to teach me from her mistakes she made at my age (23). Although I'm pretty stubborn and have to learn the hard way, she never gives up on me! She has been a great Christian influence in my life as long as I've known her. I thank God for her!
