Tales of a Wayfarer

Tales of a Wayfarer

Originally recorded October-December 2006

Everyone has a story, but not every story is the same. While some stories follow the same old script, the tales of a wayfarer are full of fear, courage, victory, defeat, temptation, trust, and miracles. These are the tales that leave a legacy, that make a mark on our world. In this series, we’ll journey through Joshua’s story, and in it we’ll see how each of us can write the tale of a wayfarer with our lives as well.

Dumpster Diving

Dumpster Diving

Originally recorded September-October 2006

Most of us look at a dumpster and see a place to put trash. But some people look at a dumpster and see it as a place to find treasure. These people are dumpster divers – adventurers who believe they can find things of great value in the most unexpected place.

Throughout the Bible, we find stories of people who stumbled onto God in the most unexpected places – the mouth of a fish or a donkey, the pain of leprosy, the silence of being surrounded, even the next bedroom. As we dive into their stories, we will learn more about how we can meet God in our own lives.

Recalled

Recalled

Originally recorded February-April 2005

There is restlessness in Christianity today, the kind of restlessness that comes from knowing something is wrong but not being sure what that something is. It’s the restlessness someone who bought a new car feels a few months later when the car’s transmission starts malfunctioning and he discovers it has been recalled because of a manufacturing defect. It’s a restlessness that lies just below the surface of all we do and say, yet still affects everything in its reach. It’s a restlessness that suggests a deeper problem – that we are Christians who have missed Christ.

At its heart, Christianity is the story of redemption. But in our quest to be converted, to have assurance, to be right, we have forgotten that God calls us to be redeemed, to have impact, to be good. Thankfully, we are recalled to a new kind of life. God is reclaiming the world through his redemptive work, and he wants us to reclaim the story of redemption in our lives and in our world.

The Intersection

The Intersection

Originally recorded March-April 2006

When we take on the name Christian, we are making a statement that we want to follow the way of Jesus. But when it comes down to the way we practice and live out our faith, many of us fall into the trap of seeing only part of who He really is. We may lean into His grace, or we may be especially aware of how He exposes sin. We may embrace His invitation to change us, or we may focus on the ways He challenges us.

In this series, we’re going to seek the intersections between these aspects of the attitude of Christ so that we can live out not just one section of His calling but the full calling He has placed on our lives.

Old School

Old School

Originally recorded January-February 2006

When we think about going Old School, some of us think of brick schoolhouses. Some of us think of ruling the dodgeball court in elementary school.  Some of us think of high school dances. Some of us think of college dorm life. No matter what our memories are, when we look back, we usually remember all of the fun and none of the education.

That’s often the way we look at the Old Testament. We heard stories of Moses and David and many others as kids, but we haven’t taken the time to learn from them. However, as we examine these people and their encounters with God in this series, we’ll find that we discover answers to today’s questions in yesterday’s stories.

Some Assembly Required

Some Assembly Required

Originally recorded September-October 2005

When you walk through the showroom of a furniture store, you see many pieces for sale. But after you buy a bookshelf or an armoire or a coffee table, you often get a terrible shock. Instead of getting a fully-formed piece of furniture, you get a flat, heavy box with dreaded words printed on the side – some assembly required.

We often experience the same terrible shock in our spiritual lives. We know that God is forming us. But God puts us in charge of putting it all together, and we’re left wondering if we’ll ever get it done.

This three-week series speaks to the places in our lives in between God’s initiative and our prerogative. We’ll see how the most important thing at the end of the day is not how we put the table together but what it looks like in the end, and we’ll discover in the process how God relates to each of us as individuals who are putting together the pieces He has placed in our lives.

Between the Lines

Between the Lines

Originally recorded October-November 2005

We’re taught to color inside the lines, to stay in our lane when we drive and to keep the bowling ball on the lane out of the gutter. The same goals apply to our Christian lives. Jesus described the life of a disciple as the narrow road that few find. But often, we fail to see that there are two sets of lies trying to take us off course. As a result, we have a hard time living between the lines of these lies.

In Mere Christianity C.S. Lewis writes: “(The devil) always sends errors into the world in pairs – pairs of opposites. And he always encourages us to spend a lot of time thinking which is the worse. You see why, of course? He relies on your extra dislike of the one error to draw you gradually into the opposite one. But do not let us be fooled. We have to keep our eyes on the goal and go straight through between both errors. We have no other concern than that with either of them.” In this series, we will not be fooled as we seek to find our way on the narrow road between the lines.

Uncivilized

Uncivilized
Originally recorded November-December 2005

Following Christ doesn’t have to be routine. The reality is that God has unleashed an uncivilized family into the world. As these barbarians act quickly, love deeply and live radically, they show how the message of Christ is an unfiltered, unsanitized, unsafe call to an uncivilized way of life.

Not everyone in the Bible got this message, but some – including Elijah, Ezekiel and John the Baptizer – did. As we look at their stories, we’ll see how we too can become uncivilized in our pursuit of God.
